Bentley Baby (2019)

Bentley Baby

The goal of this project was simple; to redesign the baby teether.

This project explores new territory for me, I had absolutely no knowledge in this field. So, research was one of the most important aspects of this project for me.

During my research in this new field, I discovered something monumental, most of the toys that babies use in the early months of development, such as teethers and rattles, get thrown away as the baby grows up. This sparked an idea in my sustainable-oriented mind.

“How can we redesign the teether in such a way that it becomes more than just a temporary object? How can we redesign the teether in such a way that it will serve more than just one purpose?

This is where Bentley came in.

You see, during my research, I also realized that baby toys could be used to market to new families.

…And fill a gap in the ultra-luxury SUV market

In the luxury SUV market, there exists three titans; Lamborghini Urus, Rolls Royce Cullinan, and Bentley Bentayga. So what separates one from the other? Why would the consumer pick one from the other?

I realized that Bentley is the most family oriented brand, out of all of them; and family is the most important aspect to this consumer.

Starting a cycle of product loyalty by gifting the consumer a product that resembles the brand the most. The elegance, craftsmanship and love that Bentley has to offer is unmatched…

So, with all these things in mind, I got to work…

The similarity between teethers and car keys…

Was the first thing that I discovered.

Fueled by research, I decided to create three objects...

A teether for a three-month old baby, one for a six-month old baby, finally, one for a nine-month old baby.

I wanted to maintain the feel that Bentley has with its products. Starting with the muted palette and ending with only the highest quality materials possible. I was also looking to mix elegance and utility, a beautiful contrast of sport and comfort, as well as Bentley is able to do it.

This was the final design that I settled on. Each teether variant serves its own purpose, and they all would come in a set. The final part of this project was packaging design, I decided to put these tethers in a wooden box that would be delivered to the consumer, along with a note, congratulating them on their newborn child.

This is the physical model that I created. The 3D modeling was done in Fusion 360 and later 3D printed using resin (for the teethers) and ABS (for the Bentley logo). The Box was hand crafted using cherry wood and finished with salad bowl finish. The interior of the box is lined with red leather and black suede.
